Pool chemistry basics
Three readings do most of the work: pH, free chlorine and total alkalinity. Keep them in range and the pool stays clear and comfortable.
The three numbers that matter
- pH: around 7.2–7.6. Too high and chlorine works poorly; too low and the water irritates eyes and corrodes equipment.
- Free chlorine: roughly 1–3 ppm for swimming. This is the active sanitizer that kills algae and bacteria.
- Total alkalinity: roughly 80–120 ppm. It keeps pH from swinging.
How often to test
In a hot, sunny climate test at least weekly, and more often with heavy use or after rain. Professional weekly service tests and corrects on every visit.
DIY vs professional service
Doing it yourself works if you are there every week with a test kit and chemicals. If you are away part of the year, weekly service with a report of the readings is usually cheaper than fixing a green pool.
Frequently asked questions
Do salt pools need chemicals?
A salt system generates chlorine, but pH and alkalinity still need regular balancing.
