How often should a pool be cleaned?
In Costa Rica the honest answer is: at least once a week, all year round. Here is why, and what each visit should cover.
Why weekly is the minimum here
Heat and strong sun burn off free chlorine quickly, and rain dilutes the water and adds organic debris. Pools that go two weeks without attention in the tropics often start growing algae.
What a weekly visit should include
- Skimming, brushing and vacuuming
- Emptying skimmer and pump baskets
- Testing and balancing pH, chlorine and alkalinity
- Checking the filter and pump
When to add an extra visit
- Before guests arrive or after a heavy-use weekend
- After a big storm
- If the water starts to look cloudy or green
Frequently asked questions
Can I clean my pool myself?
Yes, if you are there every week and keep test kits and chemicals on hand. Most expats and second-home owners hire weekly service because they are away part of the year.
