How to clear a green pool

A green pool means algae has outgrown the chlorine. Clearing it is mostly about killing the algae, removing it, and filtering the water until it tests in range.

The basic steps

  • Test the water first — pH needs to be in range for chlorine to work well
  • Brush the walls and floor to break up the algae
  • Shock the pool with a large chlorine dose
  • Run the pump continuously and clean the filter often while the water clears
  • Vacuum the dead algae once it settles
  • Re-test and repeat until the water is clear and balanced

How long to wait to swim after shocking

Wait until free chlorine drops back to a normal swimming level (roughly 1–3 ppm). Depending on the dose and sun, that is often between several hours and a day — test before anyone gets in.

When to call a professional

If the pool is dark green or black, the filter or pump isn't working well, or it has been neglected for weeks, a professional restoration saves time and chemicals. We quote it on site after a diagnostic.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my pool turn green so fast?

In tropical heat chlorine is consumed quickly; a week without adding it, especially after rain, is often enough for algae to bloom.
