Why is my pool cloudy?
Cloudy water is a warning sign: it usually comes before algae. The cause is almost always chemistry, filtration, or both.
The usual causes
- Low free chlorine: not enough sanitizer for the heat, sun or swimmers
- High pH or alkalinity: chlorine works poorly and minerals come out of solution
- Poor filtration: a dirty filter or the pump not running long enough
- Fine particles: dust, pollen or debris after a storm
How to fix it
- Test pH, free chlorine and alkalinity, and correct pH first
- Bring chlorine up to the normal range, or shock if it's very low
- Clean or backwash the filter and run the pump longer
- Brush and vacuum, then re-test after a day
Frequently asked questions
How long does cloudy water take to clear?
Once the chemistry is corrected and the filter is clean, mild cloudiness usually clears within a day or two of continuous filtration.
